What do I say...

This is my problem with blogging - I'm not always sure what to say, even with this being a blog to myself, I was stumped today which is why the post is late. Nevertheless... Can you believe we are already two weeks into the new year?  Seems like it is flying by already and I don't want to miss anything and I need to S-L-O-W D-O-W-N! I find my days are better, smoother, and more memorable when I start my day first with devotions and then with a walk while listening to Christian music.  It just starts my day off on the right foot....and this current week that hasn't happened.  Time to reset and discipline myself to early mornings with God.  Walks after the kids are at school and before work starts.

The next key in living a slower life - is to learn how to use the word NO or the phrase NOT AT THIS TIME.  When an opportunity is given, don't automatically say yes or no based on your initial reaction.  Listen, ask questions, then respond with "I need to think and pray about it before I give you an answer".  Then talk with God, your spouse or significant other, or a mentor and discern if the opportunity is from God or someone else.  Is it an add to your schedule right away, later, or is it to replace something you currently have?  Make decisions on opportunities like you do when making a big purchase - like a house.  Pray, research, understand the effects on different areas of your life and then make a decision.

Preparation is another key.  I don't know how many times my mom told me while growing up (and still today, ha ha) to prepare for tomorrow, today.  Meaning when your day is ending do your preparation work for tomorrow because it makes the day so much smoother.  Hang the clothes you want to wear on the back of the door or the front of the closet.  Gather up and package your lunch items.  Have a meal plan in place.  Look at the calendar and know what activities are scheduled for tomorrow - do you need help with them?  Its a good idea to also do this on Sunday for a full week instead of just the night before.  There may be adjustments through the week but having a head start on what you believe the week will hold is a good way to work in time for those crisis' that arise.  Yes you should work in FREE time.

Tired of making or hearing the excuse of I don't have time to eat healthy or I don't have time to exercise or I never have time for myself?  Why is that? Because we don't think these things important enough to either ADD to our schedule/calendars or if we do, we believe those are the things we can PUSH out when other items push in.  Stop now!  You are important!  Spending time taking care of yourself is important!  You are worthy!  You are loved! Do you have to schedule a pampering bath soak every night? Of course not! But book yourself an hour at least once a week to do something just for you - massage, manicure, pedicure, relaxing bath, uninterrupted reading time - you get the picture.   And schedule in that daily 30 minute exercise or walk - don't have a full 30 minutes at once (really - how long did that Starbucks line take?)  - then do 10 or 15 minute intervals through out the day.  Everyone can find 10 minutes multiple times in the day to take a short walk, do a Tabata workout, stretch, walk in place, etc.  It all adds up.  Plus you will rejuvenate yourself and increase your energy!  And making that healthy dinner at home is actually quicker than the fast food or sit down dinner you just pulled up to - of course, if you worked it in to your schedule then by all means have a dinner out occassionally.  But seriously, it takes little time to roast some chopped up potatoes, broccoli, carrots and add some beans or meat (if you eat animal protein) on the side. (I'm transitioning to a whole-foods plant-based no oil way of eating so you won't see me suggesting much meat in the diet).

And yes sometimes we fall off the wagon of organization.  Yet we have to stop and reset our selves and get back to it.  It really does help make a difference.

Will it affect my life?

I joined a weight loss FB group called SMART Weight Loss - there's a challenge every other month and I thought the accountability and guidance would be helpful.  Wednesdays "exercise" is a 30 minute walk and reflection time.  This weeks reflection question was: How will reaching your goal affect your life?  Now these goals are to be SMART goals - specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.  So my goal for January you ask: Walk 4 miles or 10,000 steps 4x a week.  Seems simple.  It meets the SMART guidelines. Yesterday I looked at the reflection question: How will reaching my goal of walking 4 miles or 10,000 steps 4x a week affect my life? Seems simple enough to answer, right? Maybe.  When you think about it the first thing that comes to mind is with more exercise I'll lose weight.  Yeah, probably. Yet when I go a little deeper and think about how completing one goal would make a big difference in my life I get a more specific answer.  Reaching this goal every week, and continuing it, makes it a habit.  This goal will help me feel stronger, more capable, and confident.  I also realized that pushing through some perceived limitations due to chronic illness I would QUIT defining myself by what I have and instead define myself by what I can do and have done with the help of my God.  Yes I have used the diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Polymyositis to limit myself in what I believe I can do.  I have a constant fear of falling and breaking a hip and I avoid activities because of it.

Well, no more.  I'm TAKING ACTION.  I'm pushing through the tiredness and the aches - if I do, then my body will adjust to the extra walking.  Why four days?  Because I do listen to my body and realize that I do need an extra day of recovery than most.  So its walk two days, rest, walk two days, take the weekend off.  Besides the first thought is right, if I exercise a little more I can help take of the weight better and build endurance and muscle and strength and flexibility.  All which help but the RA & myositis to the side.  Walking makes me feel better and when you feel better that reflects in the rest of your life too.

Here's to more walking.  To a stronger me.  To a new identity.  To a redefining of myself.  I AM A CHILD OF GOD!  I AM WORTHY!  I AM LOVED!  I AM BLESSED!

Take Action...first steps

Now that I have declared to myself what I want to do for 2016 and believe I am following the path Christ is leading me too, what are my first steps?  And thank  you to those who asked what actions I am taking. Thank you for keeping me accountable. To me, your relationship building with God is the first step in all of my life.  To continue to build this and bring it closer I need to spend time with God in His word, in prayer, in closeness with other believers.  I like spending time in devotion and reading the bible in the mornings - seems like my day just goes smoother, easier, more positive when I get that "hit" in the mornings.  The action goal is to wake up before the kids (so school days that about 5 am - holidays maybe 7 or 8).  I'm really enjoying using the Proverbs31 app called First 5.  Its a short verse and devotion with reflection that takes you about 5 minutes to go through.  Giving God your first 5 minutes of the day is awesome.  http://first5.org/  The reading I'm doing is part of what my church family does - Moravian Daily Texts.  A reading plan that you can get via email (click here to sign up).  My Oikos Church family meets Monday thru Thursday at Starbucks at 8:15 am to read and discuss these daily readings.  My action goal is to join either in person or via Zoom one day a week.

Blogging:  My action goal is to blog on a weekly basis and I am committing Thursday mornings to this.  Yes my post yesterday was a Wednesday and today actually makes two posts but that's okay.  A definite consistent post on Thursdays, with additional posts as I feel led.  I will also be posting to my Instagram account twice a week:  SimpleFamilyGoodness

Being Fit:  I am committing to transitioning to a Whole Foods Plant Based No Oil way of eating.  Not a diet, because this is a lifestyle plan.  I realize that my body feels better when I reduce or even eliminate as much animal product as I can  - no beef, chicken, pork, seafood...even cheese and eggs and dairy.  My body feels better fueled by potatoes, rice and other grains along with vegetables, legumes, and a little fruit.  My action goal for January is to be more conscious and aware of what I am eating and intentionally make the changes to my habits.  I am also committing to 10,000 steps a day from a combination of walking and rebounding.  I love my Bellicon!

Faith in my ability to pursue my direct sales business - well that comes with me affirming daily to myself that "I am a wellness advocate and a natural health educator with an emphasis on essential oils".  My issue this last year has been not seeing this as my job or business or passion but as a hobby, something I might or might not do.  So the action goal is to change my mindset with the above affirmation, carve out 10-15 hours a week to work the business including teaching classes via FB, open houses, and through contacts who are open.

One day at a time, one moment at a time, one prayer at a time.

Take Action

That's it...I am done sitting on the sidelines thinking about what I want to do and yet never making a move to do so!  Over 18 months ago, I left a secure, steady, financially stable job to come home to my kids and regroup.  To heal.  To lean on God.  To trust. To learn to love with a very broken heart. I've learned that my identity was not always in Christ but was...or is...wrapped in what I do - what my JOB is...why? because I felt accomplished at work with people depending on me and because I was GOOD at it.  I've lost that and lost myself along the way a little.  Yet I've also discovered myself and my family - those with "blood" ties and those with "faith" ties.  I've learned to step out of my comfort zone (one small step at a time) and discover a world that is just waiting for me.

Waiting for me...to walk on a mission with Christ and family together. One that might not always be comfortable because being transparent can make you itchy. :)  Waiting for me...to acknowledge that I do trust God in EVERYTHING! Asking Him for direction every day, every decision, every moment, good, bad, ugly, or otherwise.  Waiting or me...to say, out loud, what my dreams, desires, wishes are.  To align those with Christ's plans for me.  To take action on those plan's instead of shoving them to the side or behind because they scare me or push me out of the box...out of my tidy little comfort zone.  Yes to step out on FAITH.

My word or phrase for 2016 is definitely TAKE ACTION...quit making excuses, quit saying I have to organize first (yes I know you need to plan some but for me its been an excuse because I never get past the planning or dreaming stage).  What do I want?

  1.  I want to blog. Weekly.  More as God leads me.  I don't usually see myself with something to say that others would read, but that's really not the point.  I believe God has put this on my heart and I believe its to help me express myself and hold myself accountable, not necessarily to entertain others.  That makes the challenge more doable.  I don't have to make myself sound interesting if I'm only writing to myself and expressing my thoughts.
  2. I want to have FAITH in my ability to build/expand a direct sales business.  I want to acknowledge that I am worthy, knowledgeable, and have the ability to share that knowledge with others.  I want to LEAP over the fear that someone will reject me, what I'm sharing, or just plain think I'm kooky.  I want to confidently share with others what I know works for me and share that passion that good health, NATURAL health is where your healing begins.
  3. I want to be fit...yes I'm sure lots of people want this and most of us have some type of health/fitness resolution this time each year.  Eyes are rolling I can tell.  I want to lose weight, become more consistent with exercise, and gain strength/endurance.  Most importantly, I want to take care of GODS TEMPLE the way He directs us too.  I have neglected it or worse, flip flopped constantly between "good" and "bad" eating/exerscise.
  4. I want to continue to strengthen and build a most intimate relationship with my Savior, Jesus Christ.  Working on this want/need/desire, is the only way to accomplish the others.  My daily focus is on Christ, putting Him first in every aspect of my life (sounds so simple but oh so not with the temptations and pushings of this world).  Oh Lord, help me here.

So I say to myself, hit the floor child and strengthen those knees in the only way that works:  start praying, start filling yourself with God's word - daily, consistently, find a mentor, find an accountability partner, and TAKE ACTION! (TODAY)

Changing lives, changing names...

As my family and I set out on a mission together to build relationships with each other, more family, friends and others through health and wellness; I decided to change the name of the blog to the name I hope to do business as:  Simple Family Goodness.  I think this describes how we want to build and share essential oils and wellness - simple, good, and for my family and yours.  Stay tuned for more posts on how we do this.
